"THIRD SUB CLUB"

HISTORIC SPIRAL STAIRCASE.
The STAIRS for the trainroom have come from the Baltimore and Ohio railroad's S.A. Tower which once stood at the summit of the Alleghenies at a point known as Sand Patch. This cast iron spiral staircase, which weighs about 1700 pounds was acquired last year, after 3 years of work to get it, and hauled accross the country from Maryland to our Lynnwood, Washington trainhouse.

When installed, the 1910 stairwell will allow visitors to decend from our crew lounge / bunk house into the middle of the 3rd sub layout room, thus avoiding the nuisance of layout duckunders.

The stairs in the picture are the upper half of the original three story ascent. This half is installed in a family's house in Ellerslie MD. Our half of the stairs was the bottom half. The Tower had a boiler room on the first story, the relays and electrical panels and bathroom on the second, and the tower operator's room, windows, computers and the huge, interlocking lever machine on the third.

The stairs came from S.A. Tower, which can be seen at the right, in this photo of helpers being cut from a westbound freight at Sand Patch summit.
For nearly a century, this brick structure stood guard over the B&O's mountain crossing. The tower was closed in 2002, and subsequently torn down.

We also have a video of Sand Patch Grade, called

INTO THE ALLEGHENY RANGE, Vol. IV

The S.A. Tower interlocking plant machine. I only wish I could have gotten this baby too!
Pictures of the stairs installed will come soon.
PLEASE feel free to get in touch to head out trackside or to come visit for train night.
