"THIRD SUB CLUB"

MULLAN PASS Railfan PHOTO SECTION 6.
Here we see another train in the Austin area.

This eastbound mixed freight, coming down to the crossing has a pair of the Oakways on the point.

The same train is seen about 25 minutes later as it descends the last miles of the east slope in the day's last light. The train has just entereds the double track at Tobin. In 10 minutes the crew will be climbing off the Oakways in Helena for the crew change. 3 other units trail the pair of leased "power-by-the-hour" GM units.
On another afternoon we see a pusher set coasting down into the "sink" towards Helena. At Tobin the mainline goes to single track, coming out of Helena, and the next siding up the hill is at Austin. The double track runs for several miles past the east side of the yards on the other side of downtown Helena.
At that next passing point up the hill, we catch an eastbound, downhill train doing a "rollby" as the westbound 'LM' roars into Austin siding, with an SD45 on the point.
This shot, although taken only last year, well beyond the era in which we are modelling, was just too cool not to post. 3 F45s, an SP patched-over SD45, and an SD40 cross the Skyline trestle in the late afternoon sun. At the time of this picture these three F45s
were the ONLY ones running in mainline service (most likely in all of North America,) and they were all on the SAME train! The two on the point had gone west earlier in the day as an "unmanned" set on the point of a BNSF freight. I knew they would get put on an eastbound, and had hoped that it would be on the head end. I was rewarded, along with a half dozen other fans that chased this train all the way into Helena!
PHOTOS WANTED!!!!

We are going to have this as a photo section to highlight YOUR WORK! Since this is a Mullan Pass and MRL fan-site, in addition to the model railroad site, we should post photos from railfan people besides just me. Send us your cool Mullan Pass pictures, or MRL or Model RR pictures and we'll post 'em right here, and show the world how awesome you are! Scan 'em and send em. Thanks.

PLEASE feel free to get in touch to head out trackside or to come visit for train night.
