"THIRD SUB CLUB"

MULLAN PASS Railfan PHOTO SECTION 5.
Helpers, Pushers, and "Un-manned units".

As you can see, MRL uses mid-train pushers quite frequently. This is needed to lessen the chances of "string-line" derailments on the steep grade, where the tracks pass through the horse-shoe curves. The grade, which exceeds 2.5 percent in several places, also has 5 complete u-turn curves, two of which are on the trestles. The mid-consist pushers split the tonnage better than head-end or rear pushers alone.

This mid-train set is shoving west around the upper horse-shoe, above Austin. The head end is at Iron Ridge tunnel cut.

On a sunny morning a single "unmanned" helper assists a short BN manifest out of the west end of the Austin siding. MRL adds units to the head-end of under-powered trains from time to time, and they will stay with the train westward until the train meets an
eastbound, someplace between the summit and Missoula. This is done when there are lots of trains and not enough manned helpers to keep up. It is generally only done with shorter or lighter trains that do not require a mid or tail helper set.
After assisting a westbound over the pass, this helper set (one of two on the same train) has come down to Elliston to be cut out. Elliston is a flat siding at the bottom of the west slope, so it is used to break apart trains to cut out the mid-train helpers.
The units are throttling up and running back to Helena light for another shove. 1995.
As you can see, MRL uses mid-train pushers quite freequently. This is needed to lessen the chances of "string-line" derailments on the steep grade, where the tracks pass through the horse-shoe curves. The grade, which exceeds 2.5 percent in several places, also has 5 complete u-turn curves, two of which are on the trestles. The mid-consist pushers split the tonnage better.
