"THIRD SUB CLUB"

MULLAN PASS Railfan PHOTO SECTION 2.
An SD-45 leads a quintet of BN SD40-2s, all "elephant style" as they cross the Austin Creek trestle, also known as Skyline Trestle. This shot was taken from the Mullan Pass road on a summer morning. This shot is from the Iron Horse America video that is in the works now.
The west portal of the Mullan Tunnel is one of the 3 most popular railfan spots on the pass. Austin loops and the crossing in Helena at the yards and station are the other two most frequented spots. I like the west portal because it is a show of raw power (and polution) when trains blank out the sky with exhaust as the climb the final 100 yards to crest the summit. The mid-train helpers are usually also pushing hard when they get to the portal as well, and so there is more smoke. dirty, but fun spot. Morning through mid-afternoon sunlight favoirs westbound trains most of the year.
Here we see another westbound exiting the tunnel. This is before the BNSF merger, the train just happens to have a Santa Fe SD on the point. The smoke is just starting to billow out of the bore.
Here we see an eastbound BN stack train in Run 8 as it climbs the last hundred yards over the verticle curve of Blossburg Summit. Eastbounds are fun to catch here, as one can listen to the engines raoring up the valley for quite a while before they rise over the horizon in the open meadow below the summit. A long siding here provides many daily meets, and some trains get their helpers cut off here, although eastbounds usually take them down the hill for extra braking and westbounds have an easier time cutting them out of the consist on the flat siding at Elliston, 7 or 8 miles down the hill.
PHOTOS WANTED!!!!

We are going to have this as a photo section to highlight YOUR WORK! Since this is a Mullan Pass and MRL fan-site, in addition to the model railroad site, we should post photos from railfan people besides just me. Send us your cool Mullan Pass pictures, or MRL or Model RR pictures and we'll post 'em right here, and show the world how awesome you are! Scan 'em and send em. Thanks.

PLEASE feel free to get in touch to head out trackside or to come visit for train night.
