"THIRD SUB CLUB"

MULLAN PASS Railfan PHOTO SECTION.
A westbound BN grain train rolls towards the setting sun, as it approaches Garrison MT in August of 1995. The train cut off its helper sets at Elliston 30 minutes earlier.
Some of the best drama of Mullan Pass is when a heavy train tops the summit at Blossburg. Here we see the rear-end pusher set emerging from the "Blag Fog of Blossburg" after shoving through the summit tunnel. On this day the second helper set has F45 #391 at the helm. This shot was taken while shooting Iron Horse America's upcoming Montana Landmarks video, about Mullan Pass during our August 1995 shooting trip.
The favorite place for Mullan's railroad drama, if you ask most railfans, would have to be the "loops" at Austin. As seen in this photo, the trains come out of the Austin passing siding and immediately reverse direction through a horse shoe curve and climb the sttep grade up towards the Iron Ridge. This westbound grainer has just started out of the lower "loop".....
At Austin, if the helpers are spaced well, one can get the head end and mid train pushers in the same photograph. Here, on another day we see a westbound BN manifest grinding up the hill out of Austin. In the foreground a four unit pusher set leans into the tonnage to help get the train up the east slope.....
At Iron Ridge the trains reverse again and head back in the same direction they were travelling down at Austin. All three layers of this section of the climb can be seen while sitting in the shade of the trees at the Austin spur, where these photos were taken. In this secons shot we see an eastbound decending the middle teer towards Austin crossing. The cut at Iron Ridge, which bypassed a tunnel is seen above and to the left. This crossing is at the bottom of the lower "loop".
PHOTOS WANTED!!!!

We are going to have this as a photo section to highlight YOUR WORK! Since this is a Mullan Pass and MRL fan-site, in addition to the model railroad site, we should post photos from railfan people besides just me. Send us your cool Mullan Pass pictures, or MRL or Model RR pictures and we'll post 'em right here, and show the world how awesome you are! Scan 'em and send em. Thanks.

PLEASE feel free to get in touch to head out trackside or to come visit for train night.
